Prevention Based Mentorship Program (PBMP)
The PBMP is a one-on-one mentorship program that is supported with a series of workshops and activities such as Creative Parenting, Seeking a College Education, Financial Aid, Self-esteem, Healthy Relationships, College Prep for Grandparents, Mother’s day and holiday celebrations, field trips to educational institutions, Child & Youth Development, STD’s & HIV/AIDS Prevention, etc. The mentor/mentee is matched based on the student’s career selection. The mentors will assist the young parents over a prolonged period of time (at least the length of a school year) with the human development process by providing constant, as needed support, guidance, and concrete help related to the career path chosen by the students. The schools support the program by facilitating the mentors’ access to the students and by allowing the workshop presentations on campus. During the recruiting process the teen parents are asked to contribute by communicating their current needs and areas of expectation so the program can be tailored to their short and long term goals. The parents and other family members of the teen parents are invited to the workshops and activities; the implementation of home visits is under consideration.
The PBMP is a career path program with the following goals:
- To increase the career planning and job opportunities available to both males and females, as a diploma is a passport to economic success and the reduction of poverty;
- To expand access to comprehensive health services to adolescents, including reproductive health care;
- To decrease the incidence of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS;
- To increase the availability of comprehensive health and family life education; and
- To increase the role of the community in preventing adolescent pregnancy; and
- To complement schools’ teen pregnancy prevention programs.

Creating Responsible Educational Opportunities - CREO
CREO is a program created with the primary intention to provide a system of support for expectant and parenting teens attending public schools in the Los Angeles area. Buenanueva Foundation, Inc. supports and participates in activities such as group mentoring for the benefit of the teen parents, children and families; field trips and annual graduation celebrations.
The Buenanueva Scholarship Fund
The Buenanueva Scholarship Fund is available to the teen parents who have benefited from participation in one or more of Buenanueva Foundation, Inc. programs: they have received childcare services at Ciudad de los Niños Infant and Toddler Centers and/or are teen parents who have graduated from the Montebello or Rowland Unified School Districts. This financial aid allows teen parents to continue their education beyond high school, which is typically not an option for them due to their increased financial and parental responsibilities. The scholarship recipient must maintain a grade point average of 2.5 and have a desire to pursue a college, vocational training or university education. While no specific area of study is required, a minimum of 6 units or its equivalent must be carried per quarter or semester. Depending on the applicant’s progress and the availability of funds, scholarships may continue to be renewable until the student reaches an A.A., B.A., B.S. degree or equivalent for a maximum of 6 years. Our hope is that the young parents will be able to financially support their families on their own through establishing a successful career.
Cooperative Agreements
Through our partnership with the Montebello Unified School District, Buenanueva Foundation, Inc. provides financial support to four Ciudad de los Niños Infant/Toddler Centers which includes on-site quality childcare and development services for the children such as outside play area improvements, quality educational materials, and staff development opportunities.
In 2003, Buenanueva Foundation, Inc. added support services to expectant and parenting teens and their children attending the Rowland Unified School District- Santana High School ACCEPT/Life Center.
The Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program
Buenanueva Foundation, Inc. is a collaborator of Community LINKS, a California Community Challenge Grant funded by the California Department of Health and Services. The grant is aimed at aggressively decreasing the disproportionately high number of teen pregnancies in our communities. The various educational classes target pre-teens, teens and their parents. These classes address topics such as self-awareness, family communications, resisting media and peer pressure, sexuality education, leadership development, behavioral consequences and parent/child relationships. The classes are presented by professional teachers and community leaders and are free of charge to all participants. The Buenanueva Foundation, Inc. has been part of this initiative since 1997 through its participation and financial support.
Geographically, Community LINKS is composed of a group of social service agencies working together for the betterment of the families within the Montebello Unified School District and surrounding communities.
Teen Parent Conference
The Annual Teen Parent Conference is a collaborative effort between Buenanueva Foundation, Inc. and Community LINKS. Over 150 teen parents attend our Annual Teen Parent Conference to receive critical information in areas that include personal development, parenting skills, preparing for college, health programs, study skills and setting goals for their future. Various activities such as field trips, group mentoring for the benefit of the teen parents, children and families take place throughout the year to provide the teen parents with additional guidance regarding college, careers and preparing for their future and the future of their children.
One of the responsibilities of Buenanueva Foundation is to provide the financial support to cover all the expenses incurred by the conference, as well as to help in securing the participation of local and state wide organizations.
The Holiday Gift Basket Program
In partnership with Navidad en el Barrio Buenanueva Foundation, Inc. distributes over 500 food baskets to needy families identified by the organization during the holiday season each year. All the families whose children are enrolled in Ciudad de los Niños Infant and Toddler Centers are included in this food distribution program.
